Leroy was a superstar in the Real Estate business, producing three times the monthly business of his nearest coworker. He was a driven, highly competitive young man who saw his manager as getting in the way of even higher production.

Tension turned to irritability. Yelling and shouting followed. On the day he was fired, he shoved his manager in front of alarmed coworkers who reported his behavior to HR. Anger management classes were required, along with a one month interim, before reinstatement would be considered.

As this case example illustrates, workplace anger is costly to the employee the company, and coworkers. Studies show that up to 42% of employee time is spent engaging in or trying to resolve conflict. This results in wasted employee time, mistakes, stress, lower morale, hampered performance, and reduced profits and or service.

In fact, in 1993 the national Safe Workplace Institute released a study showing that workplace violence costs $4.2 billion ech year, estimating over 111,000 violent incidents. Further, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, about 500,000 victims of violent crime in the workplace lose an estimated 1.8 million workdays each year.

Clearly, poorly handled anger, frustration and resentment sabotage business productivity.
Was Leroy justified in his anger? What skills or tools should he learn to prevent future episodes? What could management have done to better handle the situation?

TOOL #1-RESPOND INSTEAD OF REACT
Using the tool of "respond instead of react," Leroy can clearly learn to control his behavior and communicate needs in a socially acceptable manner without disruptions to work and morale. The issue here is not if he was justified in being angry; it is how to best deal with normal angry feelings. A key ingredient to managing anger is learning to change "self-talk"? that internal dialog that creates or intensify angry feelings.

From a management perspective, proper anger management skills can enhance conflict resolution, promote personal growth in the employee, reduce employee stress and promote increased workplace harmony.

TOOL #2-STRESS MANAGEMENT
Leroy was clearly under a great deal of stress, much of which was self-imposed. Stress often triggers anger responses. Learning to effective deal with stress can help prevent anger outbursts, as well as reducing employee "burnout" and hampered performance. Managers should be alert to stressed employees and recommend help, before things get out of hand. In many companies, HR or EAP (employee assistance professionals) can provide you with resources and referrals.

TOOL #3- EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Popularized by psychologist Daniel Goleman, much research shows that increasing "EQ" is correlated with emotional control and increased workplace effectiveness.

What is "EQ" exactly? According to Goleman, it is "the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships."

Fortunately, skills to improve your emotional intelligence can be learned by both employees and management. The benefit is increased understanding of yourself and others which directly relates to increased productivity and workplace harmony.

TOOL #4- ASSERTIVE COMMUNICATION Communication problems frequently lead to misunderstandings, conflicts with coworkers and hurt feelings which may hamper concentration and work performance.

Assertiveness is not aggression, but a way to communicate so that others clearly understand your needs, concerns, and feelings. It starts with the familiar advice to use "I" statements instead of "you" statements which can sound accusatory, and may lead to defensiveness instead of cooperation.

Other communication improvements include acknowledging the concerns and feelings of others in your interaction with them. And, being more sensitive to what others are saying to you "beneath the surface."

TOOL #6-ACCEPTANCE
While sometimes workplace anger is manifest in "exploding," other times it is born of grievances held by employees over any number of workplace issues. Much research shows that learning to accept and let go of the wrongs done to you can release your anger and resentment. This, in turn, may improve your health, and help you focus on your job instead of your negative feelings.

Is "acceptance" easy? Of course not. Nor does it mean that you think that whatever happened to you was right, or that you have to like the offending person. What it does mean is "letting go" of the negative feelings you now experience when you remember a negative experience or you encounter the offending person, so that it no longer affects you.

Thousands of tweets flooded Twitter lamenting a Starbucks-less Wednesday.

Bleary-eyed customers who stumble into their local Starbucks every morning did so literally Wednesday. That's because hundreds of the coffee chain's stores nationwide were closed.

The forced decaffeination of America's morning commuters was due to overnight maintenance work at stores across the country that wasn't finished on time for the morning rush, Maggie Jantzen, a spokeswoman for Starbucks, told NBC station WCMH of Columbus, Ohio.?

Jantzen said she didn't know how many stores were affected, but she said about 10 percent to 20 percent of the stores that were due for the work were unable to open on time.?

The company said the work was routine maintenance on a standardized water filtration system and that no safety issues were involved.

But because of it, stores were closed across the country ? as many as 1,500, mainly in the eastern half of the U.S., a quick tabulation of local news reports and hundreds of tweets by msnbc.com indicated. Coffee drinkers were left dripless from South Dakota to Florida, New York to Texas.

"I like to start my day with Starbucks, so I don't really know what to do," Kelly Furnet told NBC station WJXT as she stood outside a shuttered shop in Jacksonville, Fla.

"It's a huge problem because, in my office, people go there multiple times in a day for their coffee fix," Rebecca Stockdale, who works near one of the closed Starbucks in Columbus, told WCMH. "You can't have them coming to work without their caffeine!"

A legal spat involving the Maplehurst community has been resolved.

An LLC with ties to Dominion Development Group has purchased three condo units in a building at 806 Maplehurst Court for $575,000 (according to deeds on file with the county*), a move that ends litigation involving the units.

As reported previously, six plaintiffs who owned the units had filed a lawsuit, alleging that the LLC had let the condo association lapse and had deliberately failed to maintain common areas in their building.

Steve Hall, CEO of Dominion, said Wednesday that the suit was dropped because of the purchase. "It all worked out very amicably," Hall said.

Lewis Howard, who represented the plaintiffs, said in an email that his clients were pleased with the outcome "but are disappointed they had to resort to litigation in order for Maplehurst to comply with the condominium documents."

*Howard said the actual sale price was $600,000.

No, that's not this week. That was on May 20, 2008, 45 games into Girardi's first season as the Yankees manager - and the only season since 1994 that New York failed to make the playoffs.

As Yogi Berra says, it gets late early - especially in the Bronx. For a team that likes to constantly refer to its history, 2012 is starting to resemble 2008, when the Yankees started 20-25 and never really contended. Now they're 21-21, tied for last in the AL East with the Boston Red Sox.

New York's offensive struggles with men on base reached new lows during Monday night's 6-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals. The Yankees went 0 for 13 with runners in scoring position, the Yankees' most hitless at-bats with RISP since July 1990.

Bases loaded, no outs and they still couldn't score. Robinson Cano looked at strike three, Alex Rodriguez swung at strike three and Raul Ibanez flied out deep.

Even when they hit the ball hard, it's right at someone, prompting captain Derek Jeter to say: "At times, it looks like there's 20 people out there playing defense."

"It's very frustrating," Rodriguez said. "We've talked about it over and over again. You can't really describe it. It's not a lot of fun obviously going out and not getting the job done. But at this point, nobody's going to feel sorry for us."

CC Sabathia (5-2, 3.78 ERA) and Ivan Nova (4-2, 5.69) have winning records, but Hideki Kuroda (3-6, 4.56) and Phil Hughes (3-5, 5.23) have lagged. Freddy Garcia (0-2, 8.22) was sent to the bullpen, eventually clearing a spot for Andy Pettitte (1-1, 2.51).

In the quiet clubhouse late Monday night, several players attributed the lack of offense at times - and the losing - to bad luck.

"More than anything, we've just got to pull together. We've got to have faith in each other. We know that we're all capable of doing the job. The back of everybody's baseball card looks pretty good," Swisher said. "Obviously the start hasn't been good for a lot of us - it's been good for some of us. But we've just got to keep pushing, man, because this team is a never-give-up type of team. And regardless of where we are right now, we're going to keep fighting, man, I can promise you that."

At 31 years, 222 days, the Yankees easily started the season with the oldest average roster, according to STATS. The Royals - the youngest at 27 years, 155 days, seemed to have a lot more energy.

While acknowledging "the scoreboard definitely speaks for itself," center fielder Curtis Granderson said the Yankees just have to persevere during their slump and remain in position to make a run.

"You know you're going to have some ups and downs," he said. "Right now, as a whole, we're pretty much having a down. And that's probably the most interesting thing, the fact that there's so many guys that just haven't gotten it going yet. But that's baseball. That means the good side is when we do all finally get it going together, we're going to be very tough.

"And there's still a long time for everything to go ahead and get on the same page. So it just takes a couple things here and there, a couple balls to fall, a couple balls to go our way," he said.
